Parent-Child Reading Notes

Today, I was reading "Reading Together with Adults" with my sons, and there was a story by Japanese author Minakami Nankichi. When the eldest son heard this, he became unhappy and exclaimed, "Written by a Japanese person? I don't want to read it!"

I asked, "Why?"

He replied, "Because Japanese people are bad guys!"

I asked again, "Then whose work do you like to read?"

He answered, "Confucius. 'In dealing with friends, trustworthiness is of utmost importance. If promises are broken, then what can be tolerated?'"

I continued, "Do you know that during Confucius' time, we were actually foreigners?"

He said, "Huh?"

I found a map and circled Shandong, telling him, "Look, Confucius was a person from the State of Lu during the Spring and Autumn Period, approximately in this area. But at that time, Guangdong, where we are from, did not belong to any country. To our ancestors, Confucius was a foreigner. However, now he has become a part of our cultural heritage for us descendants. Is it possible that writers from different countries in our era will also become a shared cultural memory and symbol of our global village in the future? When the future generations on Earth venture into the vast expanse of the universe and encounter extraterrestrial beings from different planets, as they reminisce about everything on this mother planet, will the concept of national boundaries vanish, leaving only a sense of familiarity?"

The child still didn't understand and said, "But they invaded our country!"

I sighed and continued to enlighten him, "Yes, you're right, many Japanese people were extremely bad several decades ago. To be precise, anyone who adopts extremism at any time is extremely bad. Because of this, our love and hatred should have specific targets and reasons. Let me give you a simple example: Yesterday, you were mischievous and naughty, and I punished you for it. Can I punish you again today for what happened yesterday?"

He shook his head and asked, "Why?"

I then asked, "Can I punish your little brother because of your mischievousness and mischief?"

After thinking for a moment, he cunningly replied, "Yes, because he is my little brother!"

"In that case, if your little brother makes a mistake next time, I will punish you, okay?"

He hastily said, "Okay, whoever makes a mistake should bear the consequences!"

"Yes, yes, Confucius said, 'To recognize and correct one's mistakes...'"

"I know, I know! 'To recognize and correct one's mistakes is the greatest virtue!'" the child interrupted.

"Confucius also said, 'What you do not want done to yourself...'"

"'Do not do to others!'" the child enthusiastically responded.

"Exactly, Japan is just like you. If they made mistakes yesterday, they should face punishment and consequences. But after the punishment, it is more beneficial for the future to learn how to get along with each other and live better lives. We should not live in the past but embrace the future, understand?"

"Yes, yes. And next time, when I have a good idea, you should listen to me!"

"Sure, you should bravely express your own ideas, and we will use the best method, whoever has the better one."

"Great, I will definitely come up with a better method than yours. Little brother, come over here. Let's read 'The Little Fox Buys Gloves' together."

Tales of Three Cancer Patients

The first story that touched me came from the movie "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri". When a person knows that he is terminally ill and encounters accusations and incomprehension, how will he react? The moment Sheriff Willoughby covered his head with a towel and pulled the trigger on himself, I really wanted to call him a coward! The Bible says not to kill. If a person chooses to give up just because of terminal illness and accident, isn’t he afraid of going to hell if he does such a thing? But as the plot of the movie progressed, one letter after another opened up the heart of the heroine and at the same time broke my original prejudice. In order not to drag down his family, to eliminate hatred, even if he is not understood or even misunderstood, he has to arrange everything and then make that choice. Is this brave or cowardly? Should such a person go to heaven or hell after death? I'm starting to get a little confused. . .

While I was still looking for answers, I happened to read He Caitou's 《老白歧路亡命14年纪念》, so I spent the entire Spring Festival watching all 6 seasons and 62 episodes of "Breaking Bad". After reading it, what touched me the most was the question that  Walter White asked twice: Why me? This is also the question that many cancer patients and all people in various misfortunes have questioned the sky/Buddha/God countless times in the dead of night but have not received a response.

The wise  Walter White never struggled with this unanswered question every time. The first time he thought about this question was when he just found out that he had lung cancer. He bypassed this question and used actions to answer another question that was not asked aloud: I am dead, what should I do with my wife and children? ---Do everything possible to let them leave some money [734,000 US dollars], so that they can live a better life, at least to ensure that the quality of life will not be reduced!

And an ordinary high school chemistry teacher, a person who is desperate but still wants to be self-reliant and does not eat what he gets, in this age when everything has to be paid for, what else can he turn into money besides his own chemistry knowledge? What about orphans and widows? So he walked into the world of swords and swords and intrigues without hesitation, and became the big drug lord Heisenberg.

Fortunately, he has a solid foundation and is smart enough. While avoiding many open and dark arrows, he also committed many crimes and killed several people in order to protect himself. When he saved enough money, settled his wife and children, and prepared to go to hell alone with his sins, God seemed to have not played enough with him: his cancer was cured after treatment! This made him ask the unsolvable question for the second time: Why me? Yes, the disease has a chance to be cured, but how can the sins committed be gone with the wind, how can the person who was killed come back to life? What should he do? What will he do?

The story behind is very exciting, but it has little to do with cancer. Interested friends can search for it by themselves, here we will skip directly to the finale. Looking back at the finale, was the original choice right or wrong? For  Walter White this ending is not perfect, but it is also a happy ending. But if we start from the perspective of the old Bai family members such as Xiaofan, Skyler, and Hank, do we really hope that he will make such a choice?

If love is accompanied by hurt, if love needs to cost our own or someone else's life, should we continue to love? Will we still accept this kind of love, can we bear this heavy and sinful love? I have no idea. I thought that "Breaking Bad" would give me answers that I didn't find in "Three Billboards", but now there are more questions and I am even more confused. I was thinking if I had cancer, would I choose to be Sheriff Willoughby or the big drug lord White? Are there other options?

So I embarked on a new journey and continued to look for more possibilities. I also began to recall what I had seen and gained in the past 30 years of my life. In my memory, I heard the sentence that the old woman asked the policeman in "I'm Not the God of Medicine": I don't want to die, I just want to live, okay? I also saw the scene in "Sweeping Drugs" where Sean Lau was forced to choose between two brothers, and also saw the scene in "The Three-Body Problem" where Dr. Luo Ji used all the lives on two planets to fight against the three-body man in the desert. And after Cheng Xin dropped the red button, she was bewildered like a walking dead, and finally saw a figure of a relative in her heart: my aunt.

My aunt's family are devout Christians. At that time, my cousin and two cousins were married and had children, and they were working away from home, while my aunt and my uncle were helping to take care of the children in our hometown. Although they were not rich, they were also very ordinary and happy. Until one day, my aunt, who was always in good health and could even farm the fields, often felt abdominal pain. After going to the hospital for an examination, she found out that it was uterine cancer. The doctor said that there were only a few months left or that she could choose chemotherapy to prolong her life. For a rural family, this is undoubtedly a bolt from the blue.

On the surface, the doctor gave two options, but for most of us, is there really a choice? My aunt knew that the cost of chemotherapy was not something her family could afford, and it would make the poor family even worse. No matter how her family persuaded her, she was unwilling to go. Her pious faith made her firmly believe that this was just a test from God, and she often comforted everyone not to be sad.

How could it not be sad to see my relatives being tortured by the disease and getting thinner day by day, while I am powerless? So everyone kept praying to God, and each went to find folk remedies or earth remedies, hoping to find a way to alleviate the disease. Everyone knows it's unscientific, but what else is there to do?

Later, some brothers and sisters in the church recommended a vegetarian + fruit set meal. Everyone thought it was worth a try, so my aunt stopped eating meat, and my brothers and sisters would ask friends to buy all kinds of food from all over the country from time to time. The fruit sent back to her. I don't know if this package is really effective, or God heard everyone's prayers, or my aunt's own tenacious will frightened the disease, and my aunt's condition has really stabilized.

I remember one year when I went home during the Spring Festival and took my child to visit the New Year. It should be the second year after my aunt was diagnosed. My uncle is carefully squeezing fruit juice for my aunt, and next to it is a refrigerator full of various fresh fruits, while my aunt is sitting on the edge of the patio, basking in the sun leisurely. Although she is still much thinner than before she got sick, her mental state is obviously much better than the first year. We chatted about the past, how I used to pester her when I was a child, and she only wanted her to wash me every time I took a shower, and how I wanted to believe in Christianity with her, but my mother chased her from under the cafeteria to the edge of the river. . . Now in a blink of an eye, my child is already as old as I was back then. When asked about her condition, she told me: Thank the Lord, she is much better now. Your brother and sister bought so many fruits that they couldn’t finish them all, and they wouldn’t listen to what they said they didn’t need. Every time they went so far away during the holidays, they still ran back. It was very hard work. Of course, the hardest thing is your uncle, who keeps doing this and that for me every day. I looked back at my uncle, who was concentrating on squeezing the fruit.

I thought that my aunt's condition would stabilize like this, but within a few months, I heard the news that she was seriously ill. When I rushed back, my cousins, and their children, had been with her for a long time at home. The whole family sat beside her, and everyone was very sad. Only my aunt was very open: Thank the Lord, doctor Originally, I only had a few months, but now I have far exceeded his estimate, and it is time to return to the embrace of the Lord!

In the years since my aunt died, I never realized how brave she was. It wasn't until I finished typing these words that I saw the sheriff dodging and  Walter White running away. Only she was calmly waiting for the trial with faith and love.

Reflections on Media Responsibility and Seeking the Truth

Origin of the Incident: On April 7th, China Newsweek published an interview with the manager of the Meixue Bingcheng (Honey Snow Ice City) regarding the child labor incident. After reading it, like many other netizens, I wanted to know if the young girl had been properly taken care of. However, despite searching the entire internet, I couldn't find accurate results. So, on April 9th, I contacted the official "Zhejiang Province Citizen Complaints" platform to request a public response about the girl's situation and to address the concerns of the public. Yesterday, on April 19th, I received a response from the Tian Tai County Comprehensive Administrative Law Enforcement Bureau. The reply is as follows:

Hello,

We have received your report at our bureau. Based on relevant laws in Zhejiang Province, we have punished the shop operators involved in illegal labor practices and have informed the relevant departments and streets about the individual's situation. Currently, the relevant departments and streets have taken necessary measures to assist the family in solving their practical difficulties, and the girl has returned to school. We appreciate your support for our administrative law enforcement work! If you have any further questions, please call 83889110 for inquiries.

Tian Tai County Comprehensive Administrative Law Enforcement Bureau

April 19, 2022

This response did not surprise me. According to the "Regulations of the People's Republic of China on the Prohibition of the Use of Child Labor," Article 10 states that the labor administrative department should immediately order the units or individuals who violate this regulation by employing child labor to send the child workers back to their original place of residence. The costs associated with sending the child workers back to their original place of residence shall be borne entirely by the units or individuals employing them.

So why did there appear to be a so-called "reversal" in this normal enforcement action? The selective reporting by the media is to blame.

If the people from China Newsweek had taken a moment to review the relevant legal provisions or contact the enforcement authorities to verify the information after interviewing the shop manager, they would have known that the girl was not missing but had returned to her parents. However, they did not do so. Instead, on the evening of April 7th, around 9 p.m., they directly released the recording of the interview with the shop manager, igniting the flames of public opinion. With the amplification by other media outlets the next day, the issue became a raging fire, causing a divide between the public/businesses and law enforcement. It wasn't until April 15th that the authorities, after conducting an investigation, confirmed the situation and provided a public response to the concerned netizens, gradually calming the situation. Therefore, after reviewing the entire incident, I have always wondered, China Newsweek, what exactly were you concerned about?

If you were concerned about the young girl, then up until now, your official Douyin account has not provided any updates on the follow-up of this matter. If you claim to be interested in presenting the truth to netizens, then your coverage was one-sided from start to finish. Ironically, if your goal was merely to gain attention, your own Douyin account received only a little over 20,000 likes, while media outlets such as VistaKanTianxia, Shandian Video, and Cover News, which reposted your coverage, received tens or hundreds of times more likes.

Setting aside the above points, when I try to put myself in your shoes, there seems to be only one possibility: you were merely fulfilling your job requirements. Yes, there needs to be a plot twist to generate traffic, to climb the ranks, and to increase your views, likes, and followers. And this twist can only be achieved through selective reports and exaggerated narratives. The more you play with people's hearts, the more they get hooked. The higher the viewing rate, the higher the advertisement revenue, and the more money you make. Am I right?

I am not questioning your right to make money or gain attention, but I am questioning the bottom line. I am questioning whether you have the moral responsibility and conscience that media should possess. Media not only disseminate information but also shape public opinion and guide the direction of social development. Your coverage has created a distorted public opinion and caused unnecessary divisions and conflicts. Is this the media that we need?

I believe that kindness can help some people, but only the system can help everyone. People's kindness is limited, while the system can provide fair and equal rights for all. I hope that when we face similar incidents in the future, we can rely not only on individual kindness and assistance but also on the support and improvement of the system, ensuring that everyone can enjoy justice and equality.

Challenging Media Bias: Making Truth the Standard in News

A few days ago, in the conclusion of my open letter to China News Weekly, I wrote, "Finally, I would like to say to those friends who, after reading the reports, take a stand with Meixue Bingcheng (a fictional city): Kindness can help some people, but only institutions can help everyone."

Some friends who have read the original text may find the ending abrupt. It was initially intended as an open letter to the magazine, so why did it suddenly shift focus to ordinary people? Firstly, as a non-professional in the media industry, I cannot provide them with more professional advice; I can only touch upon the subject. Secondly, the only requirement we have for all news media now is to not be so biased next time. However, achieving this goal cannot be accomplished solely through one article. The most crucial factor is for readers, viewers, and netizens to possess higher discernment and thinking abilities, vote with their feet, and compel news media to improve their professional standards. We need news that is valuable, closer to the truth, and stands the test of time, as well as the elimination of unscrupulous practitioners, reducing sensational headlines and the prevalence of news that seeks to pander to the crowd.

Achieving this is not easy, but it is not impossible either. The realization of any vision requires answering two questions: Why? How?

Why would the media engage in such manipulative reporting to manipulate public opinion and vie for attention? The most important reason is that sensational and counterintuitive news generates better statistics. People enjoy reading such content because it is detached from their work and daily lives, often with little direct impact on their interests, and it seems to require no cost. In such cases, many people tend to vent their emotions irresponsibly based on one-sided reports, drawing conclusions without thoughtful consideration, and then promptly forgetting about it. Ultimately, they become "internet trolls" in numerous instances of counterproductive news without realizing it, only to complain about the media's lack of responsibility.

Do the media have a responsibility? Certainly. As in the case of child labor, if there were an objective and neutral media outlet, it would report both the store manager's version of events and seek official statements, even if it was only confirmed with the phrase "under verification." This would fundamentally dispel misunderstandings such as "law enforcement is heartless, and the girl's whereabouts are unknown," which emerged from April 8 and lasted nearly a week.

Now, as the dust settles, when we review the entire incident, we can see not only the truth of the news but also the true face of various media outlets. As of today (May 1, 2022), the media/individuals with follow-up reports on Douyin (a Chinese social media platform) are ranked by the number of likes as follows: vista看天下、长江日报、《电商》杂志社、抚州发布、小记杨威.... On the other hand, those with one-sided reports and no follow-ups include:

The absence of follow-up reports does not signify much. It simply offers a silent reference answer to questions like, "Do they care about the same things as we do? Will they provide us with the truth? Are they one of the news parties involved or a neutral third party?" At least in this matter, if someone abandons their efforts halfway and leaves it unfinished, it indicates that they are not genuinely concerned about the girl but are merely chasing after traffic. The next time they report, we should question their credibility. As for those media outlets with complete reports, we can consider trusting them next time since they have. After all, they followed through this time.

But as an audience, regardless of which media outlet's report we encounter, when faced with explosive news, especially those that violate human nature, manipulate our emotions, and make our blood boil, we must refrain from hastily expressing our emotions. Instead, take a deep breath, calm down, and ask ourselves a question: What if it's fake? And to determine the truth, we only need to adhere to a simple principle: Listen to all sides to gain clarity, while being wary of biased beliefs. Until all involved parties have spoken and presented sufficient evidence, we should not easily trust any one side. We must maintain a cautious attitude, avoiding the embarrassment of being caught off guard when the truth emerges. It is crucial to remember our role: We are merely observers, not the parties involved, let alone judges, not judges, not judges!

I know this is challenging, especially in today's news landscape where many stories lack follow-up. If we continually suppress our emotions while waiting for the truth, which often fails to materialize, it can be overwhelming for anyone. However, if we can free ourselves from the constraints of space and the flow of time, and look back at our present selves from the future's perspective, perhaps we will realize that our current emotions and the so-called truth are not as significant as we think. How many of us still remember the shocking news of the And what roles did we play in those different stages?

Therefore, we don't need to suppress our emotions, nor should we oppose our sense of justice. Instead, we should learn to reconcile. Replace anger with understanding and take action to strive for a future without regrets. Learn to see our position from a higher perspective and look toward the present moment from the future's vantage point.

In practical terms, without the involvement of governmental authorities, we should approach all news cases with extreme caution to avoid becoming the person who offers unsolicited advice a thousand times and ends up being a bridesmaid/groomsman. We can't even accurately gauge the thoughts of those around us, so how can we expect to deduce the truth from a few words in the media? Accepting the fact that we are ordinary individuals is not shameful at all. What is shameful is being deceived and causing harm to unfamiliar strangers, becoming an online troll or part of an internet mob in a news reversal. Often, once a nail is driven in, even if it is pulled out, there remains a hole that cannot be filled.

However, in explosive news cases where one party involves the government, we have relatively more options, and the release of emotions becomes somewhat easier—after all, taking action is the best way to approach the truth. In this case, several netizens, upon seeing the news, went to the relevant local authorities to verify the situation. Starting from April 15, they received official responses one after another, and their concerns gradually dissipated along with the emergence of the truth.

Those who paid attention to this incident were fortunate. They witnessed the truth and a perfect resolution. In most cases, however, the truth of news evaporates with the wind, and it can never be revealed. Although people haven't stopped searching and attempting to uncover the truth, they always end up powerless. It's just like not knowing who the killer is in the movie "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri."

Lastly, not everyone cares about the truth behind the news. Among those with vested interests, each individual emphasizes and embellishes the facts that are relevant to themselves while neglecting the rights of other parties involved. Among the bystanders, many people's lives are already exhausting, and they don't have the time or energy to discern truth from falsehood. Everyone just needs an outlet for their emotions to prove that they aren't in the worst situation, that love still exists in their hearts, and that life has meaning. I can understand them, as if I were understanding my past self.

However, deep down in my heart, I have a tiny wish: for more people to embark on the journey of seeking truth and, regardless of the outcome, to reach a final reconciliation with themselves without causing harm to others.
